I had mentioned making “Native Futurism” work in the recent past, and wanted to post this version of Nuwu Means The People in collaboration with Nuwu Artist Fawn Douglas.
Over the years I’ve changed my beliefs on what this ideology implies, and how it manifests in our current pop cultural environment. Though I believe Natives have always adopted the latest technologies over the generations, I think this acceleration of innovations has made futurism an evergreen concept for Indigenous people moving forward.
I’m excited to explore this theme further, and collaborate with artists that feel this topic is ripe for a consistant reimagination and upgrades.
If you haven’t seen this yet, I hope you enjoy it. It was concieved as a documentary short with overlays, art, animations, and concepts that would help us see the gradual integration of technology and Native American culture. In this way, we used drons, Meta, Meow Wolf, and LED lighting to blend Las Vegas with the tribal culture that is exploding here in the city nowadays.
This film was shot during Covid, so it was the first time I taught myself graphic overlays in After Effects, and I wanted to bring an ethereal vibe to the contrast of traditionalism and modernity.
